Latest Facts of Vina Cirebon Case After Pegi Perong Arrested

The murder case of the Vina and Eki couple that occurred in Cirebon, West Java, in 2016, entered a new chapter after one of the fugitives was arrested by the police.

West Java Police General Criminal Investigation Director Kombes Surawan said the arrest was made by investigators against Pegi Perong alias Pegi Setiawan in the Bandung area, on Tuesday (21/5) night.

However, he did not elaborate further on the location and chronology of the arrests. Surawan only said that investigators were still working in the field to catch the other two perpetrators.

“It has been arrested, in the name of Pegi Setiawan. Arrested in Bandung,” he said when confirmed via text message, Wednesday (22/5).

Fugitive Pegi Perong Becomes Coolie in Bandung

West Java Police Public Relations Chief Jules Abraham Abast said that during his eight-year escape, Pegi’s perpetrators disguised themselves as construction workers.

“So Pegi who we DPO the last information we got was working as a construction worker in Bandung,” he said.

Jules said Pegi during his time as a fugitive often moved places, making it difficult for officers to arrest him. Finally, Pegi was arrested in the Kopo area, Bandung City.

“The suspect has also changed his name to Robi. But the police eventually managed to track down the suspect’s whereabouts while working as a construction porter. He changed his name. The call at work (construction porters) claimed to be Robi,” he said.

Search Pegi’s Residence in Cirebon

After Pegi’s arrest, investigators immediately searched Pegi’s residence in Kepompongan, Talun, Cirebon, West Java.

Cirebon City Police Reskrim Head Anggi Eko Prasetyo said that the search was carried out in accordance with investigation procedures after the arrest of the suspect.

Anggi said that through the search, investigators also searched for a number of evidence that could later help the investigation process run.

“What we are looking for in this search is evidence that if it can help shed light on the investigation process that we are handling,” he explained.

“We conducted this search from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. so it took us 3 hours,” he added.

Confiscate Evidence

Separately, Surawan also confirmed the search activity. He said investigators had also seized evidence from Pegi’s home.

However, Surawan admitted that he was still unable to disclose what evidence was also seized because it was still in the process of being collected.

“Yes, that’s right (Pegi’s house was searched), there were some belongings (brought). Meanwhile, we check first,” he explained.

Determined to be a Suspect

After being arrested, Pegi was named a suspect. Pegi is suspected of masterminding the murder and rape of Vina that occurred in Cirebon in 2016.

“The PS suspect (Pegi Setiawan) is suspected to be the mastermind of the murder case accompanied by rape that occurred eight years ago,” said West Java Regional Police Public Relations Head Jules Abraham Abast on Wednesday (23/5) night.

Detention of 4 Convicts Moved to Bandung Detention Center

Head of Bandung Class I Detention Center (Rutan) Suparman said there were four inmates in the Vina murder case who were temporarily transferred.

Suparman said the transfer of the four inmates to the Bandung detention center was deliberately carried out to facilitate the examination to be carried out by the West Java Regional Police.

“We are ready to work with the West Java Regional Police to ensure that this case can be resolved fairly and transparently,” he explained.

“We ensure that the rights of detainees are safeguarded in accordance with applicable regulations,” he added.

Two DPOs Still Wanted

West Java Regional Police are still hunting for two other wanted lists (DPOs) for the Vina Cirebon murder case who have not been caught. The two are Andi and Dani.

In total there are 11 perpetrators related to the Vina Cirebon murder case. Of that number, eight people were arrested first, namely Jaya, Supriyanto, Eka Sandi, Hadi Saputra, Eko Ramadhani, Sudirman, Rivaldi Aditya Wardana, and Saka Tatal.

Of the eight, seven were sentenced to life imprisonment. While the other one, namely Saka, was only sentenced to 8 years in prison because he was included in the category of children facing the law.
