A total of 1,168 Buddhist prisoners received special remission for vesak from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), Thursday (23/5).
“The number of Buddhist prisoners is 1,629. Of these, 1,168 prisoners were proposed to get RK [special remission],” said Head of the Public Relations Working Group of the Directorate General of Corrections of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Deddy Eduar Eka Saputra through a press release, Thursday (23/5).
A total of 1,160 inmates received RK I or partial reduction, and eight inmates received RK II or were immediately released.
Deddy said the amount of RK received by prisoners varies, ranging from 15 days, 1 month, 1 month 15 days, to 2 months. “There are no fostered children who are Buddhists,” he said.
The most areas that provide Vesak RK are North Sumatra with 219 prisoners, West Kalimantan with 170 prisoners, and DKI Jakarta with 161 prisoners.
According to Deddy, the provision of RK Waisak has saved the prisoners’ food costs a total of Rp. 683,910,000, with details of savings from RK I of Rp. 678,810,000 and
savings from RK II Rp5,100,000.
Remission is given to prisoners who have met administrative and substantive requirements, such as having served at least 6 months, being of good behavior, active
follow a coaching program, and have shown a reduced level of risk.
The granting of remission or reduction of criminal period is given to prisoners as stipulated in Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections and Government Regulation Number 32 of 1999 concerning Terms and Procedures for the Implementation of the Rights of Correctional Assisted Citizens.
“Based on the Correctional Database System, the number of Prisoners, Children, Prisoners, and Fostered Children throughout Indonesia as of May 17, 2024 is 264,392 people,” said Deddy.
