Civil Society Coalition Submits Petition to Jokowi on KPK Pansel

Jakarta, Hilton News

Civil society representatives who are members of Transparency International Indonesia (TII), IM57+ Institute, PBHI, and ICW visited the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (21/5). They submitted the petition through the Ministry of State Secretariat.

The petition containing three points was addressed to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) regarding the formation of a selection committee (pansel) for prospective commissioners and the KPK supervisory board for the 2024-2029 period.

“Today we submitted a petition to President Joko Widodo related to the KPK pansel,” TII researcher Izza Akbarani said at the Presidential Palace Complex on Tuesday.

The civil society coalition demanded that Jokowi organize the selection and selection of pansel by considering the criteria of track record in combating corruption and proven integrity.

Then, they also asked for the selection process and selection of pansel to be carried out openly and involve the widest possible meaningful participation of the community.

They also urged the committee to have at least sensitivity on three main KPK issues.

“Namely the fall of KPK independence after the revision of the 2019 KPK Law and the need to present figures who are able to counter the current weakening of independence, strengthen the function of the KPK trigger mechanism in law enforcement of corruption crimes, and prioritize corruption prevention in the political sector,” explained Izza.

Izza said that an objective pansel, minimal conflicts of interest, and oriented towards strengthening the independence of the KPK would greatly determine the success of the performance of the KPK leadership and Supervisory Board in the future.

Izza also admitted that he was worried that the names that had been circulating as pansel lately had closeness to Jokowi or the government. Therefore, he requested that President Jokowi not repeat the mistakes of 2019 in the election of the KPK presidential committee.

“So of course we encourage the pansel not only people who are then just administrative requirements so yes to then organize the selection of leaders and Dewas of the KPK,” said Izza.

“Regarding names, there may be some names that we propose but not necessarily these can also be accommodated by Setneg or later submitted by the President,” he added.

President Jokowi previously said that the composition of the KPK presidential committee would be announced in June 2024. Jokowi said the government was currently preparing the names.

The KPK capim pansel will number nine people consisting of government and community elements.

Pansel will be tasked with selecting candidates for KPK leadership before being processed by the DPR for a fit and proper test.
