Minister of Defense, Prabowo Subianto, received an award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in the form of a special rank of Honorary TNI General. According to military observer and Co-Founder of the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS), Khairul Fahmi, the awarding of the special rank of TNI is in accordance with the current law, namely Law No. 20 of 2009.
He explained, in the law there is a term of appointment or promotion of special ranks. However, some reports mistakenly refer to the special appointment or promotion as an ‘honorary promotion’.
“The promotion of the special rank or the appointment of the special rank is a right that accompanies the awarding of service stars by the state. As we know, Prabowo is the holder of four major military star honors,” he said in a written statement on Wednesday (28/2).
Khairul noted that there are four honors of Prabowo’s main military stars, namely Bintang Yuda Dharma Utama, Bintang Kartika Eka Paksi Utama, Bintang Jalasena Utama, Bintang Swa Buwana Paksa Utama.
According to him, these four main military star honors are sufficient as a basis for granting special ranks to Prabowo, in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 20 of 2009.
He continued that the awarding of the TNI special rank to Prabowo has no reason to be called unworthy or inappropriate, with reference to Law No. 20 of 2009 concerning the conferment of titles and honors.
In fact, he continued, if referring to the awarding of Prabowo’s main military star honor mark carried out in 2022, this special rank should have been conferred that year.
Khoirul stressed, actually without this special rank Prabowo would become commander-in-chief with his position later as president.
“However, with a military background, it is actually appropriate and natural for Prabowo to hold a 4-star rank so that as the commander-in-chief of the TNI it is complete. Moreover, based on the provisions of the law, currently Prabowo has the right and is eligible to get it considering his services and sacrifices for the TNI, the country and the people,” he concluded.
